Temperance
Factory: Wood, Ralph, II (Probably)
Earthenware figure decorated with coloured lead-glazes
Pale buff earthenware, press-moulded, and decorated with green, greyish pale-blue, brown, and black lead-glazes. The underside of the base is open and unglazed. Temperance, represented as a woman, stands on a roughly circular rocky base coloured green beside a pile of masonry supporting a jar with water issuing from its mouth. She faces to the front and rests her left hand on the top of the masonry. Herbrown hair is dressed in a chignon at the back of her head with tresses hanging down from it onto her shoulders. She wears a long green dress, with a low neck and elbow-length sleeves which is open at the front to show a black stomacher and petticoat, and black shoes. The black glaze has run down onto the top of the base.
