Probably made in the Burslem factory of Ralph Wood II (d. 1795), or possibly during the proprietorship of his son Ralph Wood III. The model was already in production by 1783, when an order from Messrs Josiah and Thomas Wedgwood to Ralph Wood, dated 16 November 1783 mentions among a long list of figures, '12 Sailors lasses' at 5d each for 5s. (Wedgwood Archives MSS 11496-12). Figures of this type were also probably made or sold by Ralph II's brother John Wood at his Brownhills factory.
