Description

Earthenware figure of a girl haymaker decorated with clear and coloured glazes

Cream earthenware, press-moulded, and decorated with clear and coloured glazes: green, pale yellow, pale brown, manganese-brown, dark brown, and a little blue. The figure is supported on a low square base with straight sides covered with clear very slightly blue tinted glaze. It is hollow underneath and has a ventilation hole under the figure. The girl stands with her feet apart next to a tree stump on a mound with roughly fluted pale brown sides, and a green top, decorated with two green applied flowers and leaves. She faces to the front with her head turned slightly to her left. Her left arm hangs down by her side, and her right is curved around a small keg which rests on top of the tree stump. Perched on top of her head is a low crowned hat with a wide brim, and she wears a green bodice laced over a chemise and stomacher, a pale yellow kerchief with blue spots, a brown skirt with an apron looped up over the front, and dark brown shoes with yellow markings.
