Description

Pale buff earthenware tin-glazed dark blue inside and outside and painted in white; the base is unglazed. Part of the side and base of a pot with an everted rim. The inside is plain blue. the exterior is painted in white with an Oriental-style design, probably part of a landscape.

History note: Found in an excavation in London by G.F. Lawrence, Wandsworth, by whom given to Bernard Rackham (1876-1964)

Note

This type of English delftware was probably imitating blue-glazed tin-glazed earthenware from Nevers in France which was decorated in white and white and yellow. It may have been made in Lambeth. Another fragment of this type of ware is C.4.67-164.
