Production: Unidentified Westerwald pottery
Grey salt-glazed stoneware, incised and painted in blue with a large star flanked by curving sprays of foliage; pewter mount and cover
Greyish-buff stoneware, with incised and rouletted decoration painted in blue and salt-glazed; pewter mount, thumbpiece and cover. Ovoid with flat base, cylindrical neck and loop handle with three small holes on the inside of its lower junction with the body. On the front is a ten-pointed star flanked by sprays of foliage; on the neck is a horizontal spray of formal flowers and foliage between bands of beading. The hinged mount on the handle has a ball-shaped thumbpiece, and on the circular top of the stepped cover is a relief of the Adoration of the Shepherds, inscribed below, 'Die Geburt Christi'. There is an incised '2' on side of the jug to right of the lower end of the handle.
