Description

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed except for the base. Cylindrical with convex sides expanding slightly towards the rim; splayed foot.

Notes

History note: James Smith, Whitechapel, London; the number on the label on the pot may refer to the lot number in Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, sale of 1901. Record of donation has not been found (1981). It is possible that this pot was acquired by Dr Glaisher at the James Smith Sale among a box of fragments including drug pots, and was bequeathed with the rest of his collection in 1928, rather than having been acquired by the Museum in 1901. In his catalogue entry for C.1349-1928 Glaisher wrote 'I have several other delft cups or unguent pots which have been buried . . As for these unguent pots a number of years ago at the sale after his death of Mr Smith who had made several collections of pottery dug up in London I bought a whole box-full of these unguent pots all of which turned out to be plain except one or two . . '
