Description

Cream-coloured earthenware, lead-glazed, leaf-shaped dish.

Cream-coloured earthenware, press-moulded and lead-glazed. The dish is in the shape of a concave, serrated-edged leaf with a curved stalk handle, standing on a shaped footring. The interior is decorated in relief with currant branches and currants.

Note

This dish may have been a stand for a small tureen or sauce boat, or a dish for pickles or sweetmeats. It was possibly made by James & Charles Whitehead of Hanley whose Pattern Book includes 'Item 76, Melon Form with Stands and Ladles in five sizes' of which the stands similar to this. Comparable leaf dishes have been attributed to Yorkshire.
