Yellow-glazed earthenware, bat-printed onglaze in black with different vignettes of a woman and child and a musical instrument on each piece.
Yellow-glazed earthenware, bat-printed onglaze in black, and painted in black enamel. The circular, deep-sided cup has a loop handle, and stands on a projecting footring. The circular saucer has deeped curved sides and stands on a footring. The cup is decorated with a mother seated on a stool, with a toddler on her knee, while she plays a harp. A lyre-shaped music stand is on the right. There are black bands round the rim and foot, and a spot, a stylised leaf and a longtitudinal stroke on the back of the handle. The saucer is decorated with a young woman seated at a square piano, with on the left, a child playing a triangle, and on the right, a child rattling a tambourine. The vignette is surrounded by a narrow black circle, and there is a thicker black band on the rim.
Given by G.H.W. Rylands in memory of his mother, Betha Wolferstan Rylands.

The print on th saucer corresponds to one of several vignettes of mothers with children on a copper plate (for printing) in the Laing Art Gallery and Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which had a provenance going back to the Maling family of potters at North Hilton. None of these vignettes corresponds exactly to known Buck designs, but are in the style of his designs of mothers with small children.
