Lead-glazed earthenware painted in enamels
White earthenware, moulded, lead-glazed, and painted in green, yellow, flesh-pink, dark pink, red, brown, grey and black enamels. The rectangular base has straight sides and is painted to resemble black and white variegated marble. On the viewer's right there is a brown column decorated with reliefs, on which there is a pile of three books. Milton stands on his right leg with his left advanced. His head is turned to his right, and he rests his left lower arm on the top of the books, and holds his right arm across his body. In his left hand he holds an unrolled scroll. He has long brown hair and wears a dark yellow jacket, reddish-brown breeches, white stockings and black shoes. A green cloak with a pink lining hangs from his left shoulder down to his heels at the back, and is held across his body with his right hand.

The source for this figure may have been a terracotta by Peter Scheemakers (1691-1781), now lost, but known from his sale catalogue of 8 May 1756 in which it was lot 23. Alternatively the portrait may be an original composition by John Cheere, by whom there is a 20 in high bronzed plaster figure dated 1749, at York City Art Gallery (formerly at Kirkleatham). This earthenware model may have been produced from a plaster cast by Cheere or by Peter Vanina, whose initials occur on other examples. Falkner noted an example wtih a bronzed finish marked 'WOOD & CALDWELL'.
