Description

Fritware painted in black under a turquoise glaze

Buff fritware, probably wheel thrown, painted in black under a crazed turquoise glaze.
Shape: T shaped rim on an angled neck descending via a sharp carination onto a conical bowl and a low foot ring.
Interior: on the rim a repeating pattern of stylised fishes is enclosed between two concentric bands. On the body, radiating from a central point, a plant design comprises large lobbed leaves (decorated with a zigzag pattern) alongside smaller curvaceous leaves (containing a dotted fish scale) and scrolling tendrils shooting from the larger stems. This pattern is delineated on the upper body by a pair of concentric lines. Glaze is pooled in the base obscuring any painted decoration in this area.
Exterior: on the neck, a band of Arabic script (cursive) is surrounded by dots and enclosed within concentric lines. A frieze of scrolling vegetation occupies most of the body above a smaller repeating fish frieze; both enclosed by concentric lines. The glaze runs unevenly over the lower body and in places onto the foot ring. Splashes of turquoise glaze are present on the inside foot ring, probably resulting from glaze dripping onto the surface from other vessels in the same kiln.
