Description

Fritware painted in black, blue and turquoise under a clear glaze

Buff fritware, probably wheel thrown, painted in black, blue and turquoise slip under a clear glaze.
Shape: hemispherical bowl on a narrow foot ring
Interior: rim is painted black under which a narrow frieze of alternate leaves and circles outlined in black and coloured with blue pigment or turquoise slip respectively. The body is covered with a radiating design comprising alternating wide and narrow wedge-shaped panels. On the wide panels, lozenges and palmettes are outlined in black, coloured in blue and contain leaves painted in turquoise slip. These shapes are set against a background of cross-hatching and foliage with alternate leaves painted with blue slip. The narrow panels are tripartite containing two friezes, of large blue and smaller black dots with black vertical lines, separated by a blue band containing foliage painted with turquoise slip. Glaze runs unevenly over lower body and in some areas onto the foot ring.
Exterior: A broad frieze of blue dots that often run to form lines is surrounded by black dots and black vertical lines, all enclosed within pairs of black concentric bands.
