Fritware painted in black, blue and turquoise under a clear glaze
Buff fritware, wheel thrown, painted in black, blue and turquoise under a clear, crazed glaze.
Shape: plain rim on a carinated bowl with a narrow, low foot ring.
Interior: rim is painted black with a frieze on the neck, enclosed within black concentric lines, comprising roughly drawn black cartouche, containing squiggled lines, each separated by pairs of blue lines. On the body, a radiating design is formed from ‘Maltese’ cross is outlined in blue. The arms of this cross contain cartouches, also outlined in blue, with black leaves, linear or dotted decoration. Filling the space between the arms of the cross black painted wedge shape panels, with dotted edges, are filled with scrolling foliage.
Exterior: rim is painted black below a frieze on the neck, identical to that on the interior, comprising roughly drawn black cartouche, containing squiggled lines, each separated by blue vertical lines and enclosed by black concentric lines. On the body, pairs of blue or black vertical lines radiate from the base. Glaze runs unevenly over the lower body to a point above the foot ring.
