Potter: Unknown
Fritware painted in blue under a clear glaze
Fritware, probably wheel thrown, painted in blue under a clear glaze.
Shape: plain rim on a carinated bowl sitting on a wide, low foot ring.
Interior: rim is brown, while on the remainder of the body a landscape scene is painted in blue. The scene features a Chinese style figure with hair scrapped back, wearing a hooded tunic reaching to the knee and holding a fan. A bird and low vegetation are at the figure’s feet and he is flanked either side by plants comprising peony type flowers, feathery leaves and pomegranate like fruit on twisted stems. Above further vegetation springs from a bracketed hillock which descends from the rim edge.
Exterior: on the body four fans are painted in a frieze with concentric lines. A pair of additional concentric lines is painted on the foot ring. The glaze covers the external surface evenly with the exception of the rim of the foot ring, which is left uncovered. A scar on the exterior body indicates contact with another vessel in the kiln.
