Description

Fritware, painted in blue under a clear glaze

Fritware, painted in blue with outlining in dark blue under a clear glaze
Shape: bulbous pear shaped bottle on a low, wide foot ring and with replacement copper alloy neck.
Exterior: copper alloys funnel with, beaded rim and engraved concentric line on the lower body, replaces the ceramic upper neck. On the lower neck, shoots ending in leaves sprout from grassy hillocks above a frieze of scrolling leaves enclosed within concentric bands. On the shoulder, a band of lappets mark the start of decoration on the body of four palmettes comprising stemmed leaves, a central lozenge and feathered lower sections. On the lower body, a band of scallops are painted above a concentric line at the join between the body and base. Dent in the side indicates contact with another vessel before firing. Glaze covers the surface evenly except on the lower foot ring, the underside of which is also glazed and with a painter’s makr under the glaze in blue.
