Description

Fritware painted in black under a turquoise glaze

Fritware, wheel thrown, painted in black under a crazed turquoise glaze
Shape: hemispherical bowl sitting on a wide foot ring
Interior: On the neck a pseudo-calligraphic frieze is painted in reserve against a black, closely dashed, background containing lobbed cartouche in which arrow shapes are drawn. Below two concentric lines are painted, one of which is crossed with vertical lines. On the base, pointed star contains a rosette painted against another closely hatched background. Radiating from the star, lobbed cartouche, whose shape is outlined inside these shapes by a closely hatched background, contain arrow shapes. Tassel shapes separate these cartouches. Glaze is pooled slightly in the base; three scar marks on the interior indicate the use of a tripod stacking device in the kiln.
Exterior: a pseudo-calligraphic border, identical to that on the interior, is painted on the neck. On the body a frieze of rectangles, in which a flower is painted against a cross hatched background, are separated by a twig like line. On the lower body a concentric band of leaves and stems are painted. The glaze runs over the lower body onto the foot ring, with drops forming on the base; the underside of the foot ring is also glazed
