Production: Unidentified Staffordshire factory (Probably)
White stoneware, pierced, painted in dark brown and yellowish-brown, and salt-glazed. The pear-shaped vessel has a slightly projecting rim at the top. The sides are pierced by six horizontal rows of small holes, separated by horizontal bands of dark brown with pale yellow between them.. The convex base is entirely covered by four concentric circles of small holes. Round the top below the rim are the incised script initials and date ' R J H 1745'.

The function of this unusual object is uncertain. It was identified as strainer in Rackham's 1935 'Catalogue of the Glaisher Collection', but it might also have been a sprinkler or a fumigation device.
