Description

Creamware painted in lilac enamel

Cream-coloured earthenware, painted onglaze in pale lilac and a little green enamel. Cylindrical with sloping shoulders, gently curved spout, and large intertwined rope handle, with split ends resembling leaves extending horizontally along the sides of the pot for a short distance on each side. The base and shoulder have a band of rouletted beading. The circular cover is slightly domed, and is pierced by a hole. It has a band of rouletted beading near the edge, and a knob in the shape of a flower on a stalk with two leaves. A flange under the rim fits inside the neck of the pot. One side of the pot is decorated with a spray of stylized flowers and foliage, enclosed by an oval frame of stylized fern fronds and tendrils. On the other side is the inscription 'I: Chapman/1774' enclosed by a similar wreath. The shoulder has a stylized floral spry on each side.The cover is decorated with two stylized floral sprays, and the knob is picked out in lilac and has two green leaves.

Note

This teapot can be attributed to Swinton Pottery on the basis of its similarity to Jug C.1052-1928 which is painted in precisely the same style in lilac, is dated '1774', and has a cornucopia-shaped lip, which is one of the characteristics of Swinton jugs A teapot with a comparable handle in a private collection is inscribed 'I. Hopkinson/1774' (with asterisk after the I). (see Documentation, Cox and Cox, 1983 and 2007).
