Description

White salt-glazed stoneware scent bottle, decorated with Oriental garden scenes

Off-white stoneware, press moulded, and salt glazed. The bottle has a tall rectangular body with four panels, on a foot slightly smaller than the bottom, gently curved shoulders and a short cylindrical neck. The shoulders are decorated with incised lines and leaves, with rouletting around the neck to represent rope-work. One of the large panels depicts two Oriental figures under a parasol, while the other shows a garden scene, with trees and buildings. The smaller panels on the narrow ends are decorated with vines. Under the base are the scratched initials and date 'T.W. 1724'.

Note

This is one of the earliest pieces of white salt-glazed stoneware. The earliest is a two-handled cup with incised inscription: 'Mrs Mary Sandbach her cup anno dom 1720' now in the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri (inv. 41-23/675).
