Description

White stoneware, press-moulded in the shape of a heart with integral relief decoration, and salt-glazed. The interior is decorated in the middle with an anthemion motif and two scrolling lines borderd by a double heart-shaped outline, and with a border of anthemion motifs, scrolling lines and loops.

History note: Sotheby's, 13 November, 1907, part of lot 66; the lot sold for £7.10s.0d. to Mr Phillips of Hitchin, from whom purchased for £1.12s. 6d. on 5 December 1907 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

Heart-shaped pickle or sweetmeat trays are known to have been made by Thomas and John Wedgwood of the Big House, Burslem from their crate-book preserved in the Potteries Museum, Hanley.
