Triangular Pickle Tray
Production: Unidentified Staffordshire factory
White stoneware, press-moulded with integral decoration in relief, and salt glazed. The triangular tray is decorated inside with an anthemion motif in each point, a central flowerhead, and scrolling foliage, among which on one side, is a small crowned male head in profile to right. the exterior is undecorated
History note: Sotheby's, 13 November 1907, part of lot 66; the lot sold to Mr Phillips of Hitchin for £7.10s.0d.; bought from him for £1.12s. 6d. on 5 December 1907 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

Trays of this form have been attributed to the factory of Thomas and John Wedgwood, of The Big House, Burslem, and were probably made by several other north Staffordshire potters in the mid 18th century.
