Description

White stoneware, press-moulded, and salt-glazed. The flower-holder is in the shape of a cornucopia decorated in relief on the front with a half-figure of Flora in a rococo-scrolled panel, with a frill-like border on either side, and below a stem of ivy twined round the tapering lower part. There are three pierced holes in the top edge, and three on each side of the panel.

Note

Wall pockets of this design were also made in lead-glazed earthenware, and many examples are known. Invoices for 'Cornu Copias' , both for block moulds, and finished items, have associated their manufacture with William Greatbatch of Fenton, and Thomas & John Wedgwood, of Burslem, but there are cornucopia flower holders of several different designs so it is not possible to attribute this example conclusively. It seems likely that they were made by several other north Staffordshire potters between about 1760 and 1770. The female figure is usually identified as Flora, an ancient Italian goddess of flowers and spring.
