Description

Fritware painted in black, blue and turquoise under a clear glaze

Pinky buff fritware, wheel thrown, painted in black with blue and turquoise highlights under a clear, lightly crazed glaze
Shape: flat everted rim on a bi-conical bowl with a low foot ring
Interior: a radiating design comprises an eight pointed star in blue and black separating black cone shaped cartouches which close in arcading on the rim. The cartouches contain, alternately, black cursive script on a hatched ground, or black dots and lines flanked by borders of turquoise or blue. In the spandrels around the arches on the rim, black scrolling vegetation is coloured with blue or turquoise. Three trivet marks in the base indicate use of tripod stacking devices during firing.
Exterior: the rim is painted black. On the body vertical lines radiate between concentric bands, all in black. Glaze covers the surface unevenly, running over the carination onto the lower body, with a spot on the underside of the foot ring
