Description

Fritware painted in blue and black under a clear glaze

White fritware, wheel thrown, painted in blue and black under a clear, crazed glaze
Shape: everted rim and straight neck on an inverted pear shaped body descending onto a low foot ring.
Exterior: rim is painted black, while on the neck a frieze of blue diamonds shapes, containing black circles and dots, are flanked above and below with black triangles. On the shoulder, a blue band, enclosed between black concentric lines, separates decoration on the body from that on the neck. Two narrow friezes are painted on the upper and lower body comprising, respectively, a narrow band of black Arabic script or black fish swimming horizontally between wide black concentric lines. Predominant on the body, a broad frieze of vertical panels of blue arabesques painted against a background of black scrolls and black stylised scrolling vegetation, are separated by pairs of blue and black lines. The glaze runs unevenly over the lower body onto the foot ring.
Interior: partially covered with a clear glaze, otherwise undecorated.
