Butter Dish, Cover and Stand
Production:
Unidentified Staffordshire factory
Factory:
Humphrey Palmer's Factory
(Possibly)
White alt-glazed stoneware with diaper pattern
Off-white stoneware, press moulded and salt-glazed. The dish was made in two halves, which were joined together. The dish has an uneven base, and on either end of the sides has vertical lugs with holes in them, possibly for a wire handle. The domed cover has wavy edges, and an applied knob moulded in the shape of a recumbent cow. The surface of the dome has diamond shaped perforations in a diamond formation: four groups with four diamonds, and below them, four groups with three. The stand has a wavy edge, with a plain shallow well. All three pieces are decorated with panels of trellis diaper pattern flanked by scrolls, alternating with panels of wickerwork. The dish has this pattern around the rim, approximately 2cm wide.
History note: Imported from Holland by Mr Staal of Brownlow Street, Holborn, shortly before he sold it for £3 on 17 November 1905 to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

Fragments of salt-glazed cow finials and fragments of plate borders comparable to those on this butter dish have been found on the site of Humphrey Palmer's factory in Hanley, but comparable butter dishes were probably made by several potters during the third quarter of the eighteenth century.
