Description

Earthenware, coated in a white slip, painted in black and turquoise under a clear, crazed glaze

Buff earthenware, wheel thrown, coated in a white slip and painted in black and turquoise under a clear, crazed glaze.
Shape: plain rim on a cono-segmental bowl and a low foot ring
Interior: rim is painted black. On the body, a frieze of oval cartouche with scalloped edge, framed above by abstract birds, both outlined in black against a turquoise background. The cartouche contain scalloped black ā€˜Sā€™ shapes and turquoise tongue shaped leaves outlined in black. On the base, a five pointed star with dashes between and adorning the arms, is contained within a roundel with contoured edge painted turquoise. Three scars on the base indicate the use of a tripod stacking device in the kiln.
Exterior: black paint on the rim continues on the exterior, while on the upper body, a frieze of scrolls is contained within two concentric lines. Glaze covers this frieze but ends on the upper body, the white slip cover the exterior including the underside of the foot ring. Two scar marks on the rim and upper body probably result from contact with other vessels in the kiln.
