Description

White salt-glazed stoneware decorated with gadrooning, human masks, animal and plant motifs

Creamy-white stoneware, slipcast with integral relief decoration, with applied moulded spout, handle and knob, and salt-glaze. The pot stands on a low foot. The lower part of its squat bulbous body is decorated with gadrooning above which it is covered with a busy design of human masks, animals, fruit, foliage, and flowers in relief. Round the plain shoulder there is a zig-zag border. The spout in the form of a monster's head with a human arm on each side, and has nine holes behind it to emit the tea. The S-shaped handle in the form of a dragon. The domed cover is decorated with indistinct foliage and flowers in slight relief, and has a knob in the shape of a lion, whose head is missing.

History note: Sale at Broughton Rectory, Hampshire, on 16 August 1917; bought for £20 by Mr Goodman, Christchurch Road, Bournemouth on behalf of Mrs W.D. Dickson, Bournemouth, by whom given as a Christmas present in 1920 to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
