Description

Off-white stoneware, slip-cast with applied moulded handle, spout, and knob, and salt-glaze. The teapot has an inverted pear-shaped body rising from an octagonal spreading base, and has a short octagonal neck. It has a curved eight-sided spout, and a handle in the form of a scaled monster with three leaves projecting from its lower junction with the body. The octagonal domed cover has a cone-shaped knob with a ventilation hole beside it. The sides of the pot are decorated with eight panels containing the following motifs: a medallion with a bearded head in profile to right over a fox carrying off a goose; Danae above a unicorn; a shield charged with a chevron and three fleurs-de-lys above a stag over a bird; the fable of the Fox and the Crane above Cupid riding a lion with a swan below. The cover is decorated with two rows of fan-like motifs and a border of small stylised plant motifs.
