Description

White salt-glazed slip stoneware decorated in relief with a fox-hunting scene and a drinking scene; lion-shaped knob on the cover

Off-white stoneware, the body slip-cast with integral relief decoration, applied handle, spout , foot, and knob, and salt-glaze. The pear-shaped body has a gadrooned shoulder, a loop handle with a kick at the lower end, a curved spout with scrolled sides and monster's head mouth, and stands on a almond-shaped foot with sloping sides. The oval cover is domed and has a knob in the shape of a recumbent lion. The upper part of one side of the body is decorated with a hunting scene with several horsemen and hounds. The other side has a double headed eagle flanked by two rectangular windows with a winged head above each pair. Below these, on the left two women are drinking tea at a table approached from the viewer's right by a maid carying a cup, and on the right, two men are drinking at a table, approached from the viewer's left by a man holding a wine bottle. In the middle, below the eagle there is a fireplace with a pot on the hob. The lower part of the pot is decorated with slanting fluting. The cover has a bird amidst foliage on each side of the knob.
