Description

White salt-glazed stoneware, with decoration of panels enclosing reliefs of animals and people

Off-white stoneware, slip-cast, and salt glazed. The cup is slightly oval, and stands on a small foot. On the outside there are eight panels of relief ornament: a double-headed eagle; two figures and a domed buildings; a drinking party, with a fox carrying off a goose below; Cupid on a lion, and a swan; Danaë above a unicorn; a huntsman with hounds; a stag; a tea-party.

History note: Mr John W. Ford Collection, Enfield, Middlesex; sold, second part by Sotheby's 22 May 1908 lot 23; bought by Mr Stoner for £5; from whom bought for £5.10s. 0d. on 25 May by Dr Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
