Description

White salt-glazed stoneware teapot on three feet, decorated with a large shell on both sides

White stoneware, with slip-cast body, applied moulded parts, and salt-glaze. The bulbous pear-shaped pot stands on three shell and paw feet, and has a slender curved spout with a bird's head at the top, and a rolled loop handle with three pairs of horizontal cuts in it, and a slight kick at the lower end. The oval, domed cover has a capstan-shaped, flat-topped knob with a piercd ventilation hole beside it. The body of the pot is decorated in relief on both sides with a large pecten shell, flanked by dolphins at the top. On one side of the hinge of the shell there is a male head with a semi-circular scrolled headdress., and on the other side, a semi-circle filled with two large and two small flowers and stylized foliage. The oval domed cover is decorated with two shell motifs and two flowers.
