Description

White stoneware, slip-cast, with applied moulded feet, and salt-glaze. The pear-shaped pot has a projecting, upward tilting lip, a scalloped and cusped rim, a reeded loop handle with a kick at the lower end, and three shell and paw feet. Both sides are decorated in relief with a large pecten shell, and on either side of the lip there is a snail and two small pecten shells. On each side of the upper junction of the handle there is a leaf.

Note

This small jug is surprisingly light in the hand because it is slip cast. A master block from which moulds were made for a slightly squatter jug with pecten shell reliefs on the sides is initialled RW for Ralph Wood.and dated 1749 is in the Victoria and Albert Museum
