Note

The teapot is decorated in imitation of Chinese 'famille rose' style porcelain. This style was characterised by soft colours, including notably a rose-pink, which this teapot imitates particularly well. Famille rose porcelain was produced in China specifically for the Western market, where Oriental wares were viewed as the height of fashion. However, they were also very expensive. English potters produced objects like this teapot in the cheaper material of salt-glazed stoneware for middle class customers who could not afford genuine Chinese porcelain.
