Production: Unidentified Staffordshire Pottery
White salt-glazed stoneware painted in enamels with an Oriental lady in a garden
Off-white stoneware, thrown, turned, salt-glazed, and painted in olive-green, pink, brown, bluish-grey, and black. The mug is bell shaped, with a reeded loop handle, and stands on a foot. The sides are painted with an Oriental woman, in a bluish-grey skirt and brown coat, flanked by flowering plants growing on rocks. The top half of the handle is decorated in brown, with two sets of brown arrows and dashes pointing towards a dot, with an arrow and dash beneath.
History note: The Rt Hon. Samuel Montagu, First Lord Swaythling (1832-1911). Sold Christie's, 8 May 1924, The Swaythling Heirlooms, sold by order of the Trustees of the Rt Hon Montagu, First Lord Swaythling deceased, being part of the Swaythling heirlooms, lot 53 (also including Glaisher numbers 4407 and 4408); bought by Frank Partridge on behalf of Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge, for 15½ guineas
