Description

Agate ware, press-moulded and covered in lead-glaze.

Agate earthenware made with light red, white and blue clays and lead-glazed. The press-moulded jug is a baluster shape with a wavy rim. The jug stands on three feet, moulded to resemble paws with lion masks, and has a loop handle with notches cut into the terminal.

Note

This baluster-shape is sometimes known as ‘silver-shape’ because it imitates a common shape for silver jugs. The use of three feet, moulded to resemble paws and lion masks, is another common feature of silverware.
