Description

Soft-paste porcelain teabowl and saucer, moulded and decorated overglaze with flowers and fruits in polychrome enamels, and gilt.

Soft-paste porcelain teabowl and saucer, moulded and painted onglaze in polychrome enamels and gilt. The lower part of the cup and saucer well are moulded with overlapping stiff leaves, resembling an artichoke or pine cone. They are painted with whole and cut fruit and flowers, the rims with gilt dentil borders.

Note

The fruit painting is reminescent of fruit decoration carried out in James Giles' London atelier on Worcester porcelain during the 1760s, on which it was clealy an influence. At Chelsea, the overlapping scale pattern is also found with a claret ground, and with scales painted to resemble peacock feathers. See documentation
