Bowls of this type are more commonly attributed to Deruta, but the colouring and lustre suggest that this example was made in Gubbio
Label text from the exhibition ‘Madonnas and Miracles: The Holy Home in Renaissance Italy’, on display at The Fitzwilliam Museum from 7 March until 4 June 2017: The interior of this bowl is completely filled with a scene of the penitent St Jerome. The hermit is shown kneeling in a hilly landscape, gazing at a crucifix held aloft in his left hand, while clasping a large stone in his right, with which to beat his breast in penitence. The reverse of the bowl is embellished with lustreware bands, which give it an air of luxury.
Decoration composed of high-temperature colours ( blue and green) reduced pigment lustre ( copper appearing red) reduced pigment lustre ( silver-yellow, appearing brownish-gold)
