St Jerome in the Wilderness. The Saint kneels facing to the right, holding a crucifix in his left hand and a stone in his right. A lion sits to the right of him. In the background there are two hills and two cypress trees. The sky is indicated by blue stripes and lustre clouds. Note

Label text from the exhibition ‘Madonnas and Miracles: The Holy Home in Renaissance Italy’, on display at The Fitzwilliam Museum from 7 March until 4 June 2017: The interior of this bowl is completely filled with a scene of the penitent St Jerome. The hermit is shown kneeling in a hilly landscape, gazing at a crucifix held aloft in his left hand, while clasping a large stone in his right, with which to beat his breast in penitence. The reverse of the bowl is embellished with lustreware bands, which give it an air of luxury.
