Description

White saltglazed stoneware figures of a shepherd and shepherdess standing on a pedestal accompanied by their dog

Off-white stoneware, moulded in parts, assembled, and salt-glazed. The figures are supported on a high rectangular pedestal with mouldings round the top and bottom of its sides. It is hollow underneath and has a small ventilation hole under the shepherd. The figures stand side by side facing the viewer with a very small seated dog between them. The shepherdess, on the left, is a little shorter than the shepherd. In her right hand she holds a staff, and in her left holds a stem with a flower and leaves in front of her waist. The shepherd holds a similar stem in his left hand, and with his right hand supports a staff which rests on his left shoulder and terminates beside his feet.
