Description

White stoneware duck with dark brown slip eyes and salt-glaze.

White stoneware, press-moulded, with dark brown slip details and salt-glaze. The duck has no feet or legs and instead is supported on a circular base which is hollow underneath. The duck has a fan-shaped tail. Its body, wings and tail are integrally moulded with scale-like patterns and long feathers. Its raised neck and bill are bare. The eyes are painted in with dark-brown slip and there is a splash of slip on its right wing. The whole is a rather muddy white, and the neck and much of the body are slightly discoloured and are speckled with minute black spots.

Notes

History note: Stewart Acton, a dealer in Brighton, from whom purchased for £25 on 22 November 1923 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge. Acton had sent the duck on approval to Ramsgate where Glaisher was staying.
