Description

White salt-glazed stoneware group of a seated gentleman embracing a lady seated beside him

Greyish-white stoneware, press-moulded and salt-glazed. The underside is closed and has a small ventilation hole. The base is in the form of a three sided rock or mound with two circular holes pierced through the top behind the couple, who sit close together on its top. The man has his left arm around the woman's shoulders and she has her left arm around his. He has raised the woman's skirt to reveal her left knee and she places her left hand on his to restrain or encourage him. She wears a round cap, an open jacket over a stomacher, and a full skirt, and he has a shirt, jacket, breeches and buckled shoes (his right leg is missing).
