Lead-glazed earthenware transfer-printed in dark green with Arabic inscriptions.

Cream earthenware, moulded, lead-glazed and transfer-printed in dark green. The circular plate has a wide sloping and slightly concave rim, and a deep well with curved sides. The middle is decorated with three lines of Arabic, reading: ‘God is One. He has no Partner/Mohammad is the Prophet of God/ . . . . .. On the rim are the names of the first four Caliphs: ‘O Abu Bakr’, ‘O Othman’, O Omar’ and O Ali’ and ‘There is no God but the One God’ twice, separated by foliated scrolls. Note

This design with an Arabic inscription from the Qur'an was made for export to the Middle or Far East, and plates decorated in this way are often found in Indonesia and India. The donor of this soup plate, Ivor Hugh Norman Evans (1886-1957), was an anthropologist and archaeologist who spent much of his career in the then British Malaya, and was appointed curator of the Museum in Taiping in 1917.It therefore seems likely that he acquired it there. The copper plate for the pattern was at the Spode factory before its closure. It was Patent no. 91579, registered in 1853 by George Houghton of 41 Threadneedle Street, London. A plate with a similar design is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, inv. no. C.50-1882.
