Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome, with an unidentified figures in a landscape.

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed overall; the reverse off-white and tinged with green. Painted in shades of blue, green, turquoise, yellow, orange, stone, brown, manganese-purple, black, and white. Shape 58, with two shallow concentric grooves under the edge. Circular with a broad, slightly sloping rim and small, deep well; the underside of the rim moulded with three bands of reeding.
On the left, a soldier stands with his back to the viewer, his body turned to the left and his left hand grasping an anchor attached by a ring to a broken-down wall in front of him; his right hand rests on a shield. A man stands beyond the wall, looking out over a landscape with a river, hills and a distant town. On the right, beneath a looped-up curtain, an elderly bearded man stands drawing his cloak around him. In the right foreground, a draped putto hides his face in his hands, turning away from the brilliance of the sun surrounded by swirling clouds. A black line and a yellow line encircle the edge. The back is inscribed in the middle in very dark blue: '.1534./Gia fiameggiaua l'/amorosa stella./.F.X.A.R./i/Urbino.'(Already the loving star was flaming .F.X.A.R. in Urbino.).

Note

The figures on the dish were drawn from four printed sources. The warrior on the left was adapted and reversed from Sol by the Monogramist I.B. The bearded man on the right was derived from a figure on the extreme left of the balcony in the Martyrdom of St Lawrence engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi after Baccio Bandinelli, again reversed. The man in the centre was probably based on a man in the middle of the balcony in the same print. The putto is a reversed, draped and wingless version of Cupid in the Death of Cleopatra, engraved by Agostino Veneziano after Raphael
