Description

Red earthenware,thrown, covered with white slip with incised decoration under yellowish lead-glaze. The jug is bulbous with a short neck and pinched lip, and a loop handle. It is decorated with incised flowers and a butterfly, partly coloured in green and manganese-purple. The handle decorated with a stem ofconvolvulus foliage. Under the base is the incised inscription 'E. B. Fishley/H. Potter/Fremington'

Notes

History note: Given to Dr Glaisher by Mr Cowles of the Archeological Museum, Cambridge on January 25, 1911. He, stated that his uncle had bought it at the Fremington Pottery thirty years ago, i.e. around 1880, and that it had been decorated by a clergyman (presumbly H. Potter) who was visiting the pottery.
