Description

Dark cream and brown earthenware decorated in dark brown and green under lead-glaze

Dark cream press-moulded earthenware body with applied pale brown eyes and mouse, decorated under lead-glaze with dark brown eyebrows and outlines round the ears, and mottled in dark green on the back of the head and the whole body below the neck. The underside is open and is glazed for a short distance up the interior. The cat is sitting up with its head turned towards the viewer, and holds a mouse in its mouth.

History note: Christie's, 6 June 1912, lot 41; bought by Mr Stoner for 13 guineas (£13.13s.) on behalf of Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge, who paid him £14. 4s .6d. on 17 June on returning from Belgium
