Description

White earthenware figure, press-moulded in two parts with separately moulded head and hump, and lead glazed. Painted underglaze in cobalt blue and in black, green, orange, red and flesh-pink enamels, and gilt.

Mr Punch stands, holding a stick in his right hand and a cup in his left. He has a pronounced upward pointing hump on his back and a pointed nose and chin. The figure is well coloured. He wears a blue jacket edged in gilt, a ruff collar, a pointed orange hat, orange and green check trousers, and black shoes. His teeth, bared in a menacing grin, are outlined in red. The round base has a gilt line across the front and some radial moulding on the top. The base is open and glazed. The back is rounded, and the top half decorated.
