Spring from a set of Seasons
Production: Unidentified Staffordshire factory
Lead-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome enamels. Spring represented by a girl holding a posy and a basket of flowers.
Pale cream earthenware, moulded, covered with slightly blue tinted lead-glaze (pearl glaze), and painted in blue, turquoise, greyish-green, yellow, flesh pink, pink, maroon, pale brown, dark brown, and black enamels. There is a ventilation hole in the centre of the underside. The base is square with straight sides canted inwards on the underside, and is decorated on each side with a continuous maroon band. The figure is supported on a mound base which rises up at the back and is painted in green and brown to resemble rocks and grass. The girl stands with her bare feet slightly apart and her head turned towards her right. In her right hand she holds a small bunch of flowers up to her chest, and in her left hand holds a basket of flowers. She has pale brown hair and a black broad-brimmed hat perched on the right side of her head. She wears a white chemise, a pink bodice with maroon edges, a turquoise stomacher, and a white skirt which is hitched up at the front to reveal a turquoise lining, and below it, a pink petticoat with a maroon criss-cross border.
