Description

White earthenware transfer-printed underglaze in blue with Greek pattern,

White earthenware,moulded with an indented rim, slightly scalloped edge, sloping sides and a flat centre, transfer-printed underglaze in blue. Decorated in the centre with an inset, oblong medallion, enclosing a female figure between two felines, bordered by four-petalled flowers between two scalloped lines, all reserved in a blue ground. The sides and rim are decorated with four urns between four shaped reserves, each depicting classical scenes. The spaces between the urns and reserves are decorated with fruit and flowers, all reserved in a blue ground.

Note

The designs for the Greek pattern service were derived from 'Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton, with engraved borders. Drawn and engraved by the late Mr Kirk, 1804. The pattern was introduced in 1806.
