Description

White earthenware, transfer-printed underglaze in blue with Greek pattern

White earthenware drainer, moulded in a circular shape with a twisted handle, transfer-printed underglaze in blue. The drainer has shallow, sloping sides to a flat centre and one bevelled, arching handle, raised inside the right-hand edge. The centre has four sets of four holes circling a central set of five holes and the base has a footrim with three equally spaced arches. Decorated with a small, central medallion enclosing a crowned rider on horseback, reserved in a blue ground and bordered by a circle of four-petalled flowers between two scalloped lines. The rim is decorated with two urns, alternated with two, shaped reserves, each featuring classical scenes. The spaces between the urns and reserves are decorated with fruit and flowers, reserved in a blue ground.

Note

The designs for the Greek pattern service were derived from 'Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek. Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton, with engrave borders. Drawn and engraved by the late Mr Kirk, 1804. The Greek pattern design was introduced in 1806.
