Description

Pearlwarecup and saucer, part of a set with a teapot and another cup and saucers. Decorated in underglaze blue with transfer prints of landscapes and floral borders.

White earthenware, transfer-printed in blue under slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze (pearlware). The cup has deep curved sides, a recessed base, and a loop handle. The circular saucer has deep curved sides and stands on a footring. The cup is decorated on the outside with a continuous landscape. Onthe right there is a cottage, a fence and bushes, and two figures, and on the left two cows in a pond and a tree on a bank. In the distance there is a river, cliffs, and a hill with a church spire visible above it. Inside the rim there is a stylized floral border. The inside of the saucer (A) is decorated with an almost similar landscape but with two large trees beside the cottage, and a different background. Round the edge there is a floral border to match that on the cup.
