Fritware, coated in grey slip painted in white slip and black under a clear glaze
Buff fritware, wheel thrown, coated in a grey slip with decoration painted in yellowish slip and outlined in black under a clear glaze.
Shape: hemispherical bowl with plain rim sitting on a low, wide foot ring.
Interior: rim is painted black, while the remainder of decoration is painted in yellowish slip, outlined or detailed in black, against a background of black dashes. On the body, a frieze of flying phoenix and birds is painted against a background of leaves, all enclosed within two concentric white bands. These animals are separated by a pear shaped cartouche containing further leaves. On the base a prancing stag, with a dotted coat, is painted against leaves and lotus flowers.
Exterior: black decoration on the rim continues on the exterior, above a band of yellowish slip. On the body, radiating from a black concentric line on the lower body, a lotus petal design is painted in yellowish slip, outlined in black with a central black dotted line. Glaze runs unevenly over the lower body, at times reaching the foot ring. The underside of the foot ring has spots of glaze.
