Lead-glazed earthenware reclining figure of Mark Antony painted in enamels and silver (platinum) lustre, now black

White earthenware, press-moulded, covered inside and outside with slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze, and painted in blue, turquoise, sage-green, yellow, flesh-pink, red, pale manganese-purple, greyish-brown, and black enamels, and silver (platinum) lustre. Anthony reclines sideways on an oblong rocky base with a low heap of rocks at the left end, and four flower heads at intervals across the front. . He looks upwards towards the viewer's right. His right forearm rests on the higher rocks, and he holds the tip of the hilt of his sword in his right hand. His right leg is extended under his left, and his left hand rests on his right thigh. He has greyish-brown hair, pink flesh. and red lips. He wears a silver-lustre cuirass with red edging, a red belt, a manganese-purple skirt lined with yellow, and sandals with red straps. His cloak, on which he is lying, is manganese-purple with a turquoise lining. The base is dappled in green and black, much of which has been lost, particularly across the front..

History note: Percy Fitzgerald Collection; Christie, Manson & Woods, 24 January 1908, ‘Catalogue of the earthenware collection of Staffordshire ware formed during the past forty years by Percy Fitzgerald Esq FSA of 37 St George’s Road, SW. Much of which as been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum …, part of lot 57 with a figure of Cleopatra; purchased by Mr Sutton of Eastbourne for hammer price of £14.14s. plus 20% commission for Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.

Note

The model was derived from a Luneville figure of Rinaldo by Paul-Louis Cyfflé. It may not originally have been paired with the polychrome figure of Cleopatra which was bought with it.
